Daytime Wedding Debunked: Your FAQs Answered!

    June 5th, 2018

Is it just us or are daytime weddings becoming more and more appealing? It doesn’t get much better than celebrating love outdoors; partying, drinking and dancing with everyone who is important to you.

Many couples may love this idea but don’t know where to start planning. Today at KEP we’re going to break down some of the basic questions you may have about how to host a daytime wedding and how to smash it.

    What should we serve?

Everyone’s gotta eat right?! A traditional luncheon is a good place to start. It offers the same feel of what an evening wedding would bring but during the day. If you’re not feeling the lunch vibes, brunch is another great option that many seem to be loving these days. Get creative and offer a waffle bar with all the toppings you can imagine, or even an omelette station. Sit and think of all your favorite brunch foods and try to devise a creative menu from that. Champagne cocktails, caesars, lighter wines, and a few liquors should also be offered to your guests.

What should we wear? And how about our guests?

With daytime weddings we tend to see dresses and suits that are on the lighter end. Men usually opt for a lighter suit outside of the traditional black suit. For the bride, a wedding gown is still the go to but a more relaxed fit is sometimes seen. However, what you chose to wear is is completely up to you and your boo. Just because your wedding is taking place during the day doesn’t mean you can’t go a more formal route. Your guests attire will depend on the formality of your wedding. For the women, sundresses and daytime cocktail attire are great go to’s and as for the men, a light suit that they will be comfortable in are all appropriate options.

    Can we still have dancing?

Heck yeah you can! If you are dancing your guests will dance as well. It’s up to you what kind of music you’d like to have. Maybe you know a DJ who can keep the party lively but still daytime appropriate.  Another great option is an acoustic guitarist and singer. They can keep everyone entertained while eating and bring the tempo up afterwards for dancing.

Do we have to provide evening entertainment? What should we do after the wedding?

Once your wedding is over you have no obligation to entertain your guests for the rest of the evening. For guests who are coming from out of town, maybe you’d want to provide them with a list of local things to do or sights to see. The rest of the day and night is yours for the taking! The best part about a daytime wedding is that you’re free to spend some quality time together later in the evening. You can book appointments at your hotel spa, invite family and friends out later on in the evening or even depart for your honeymoon! The options are basically endless and can cater to whatever you choose.

A daytime wedding can be as traditional or as modern as the couple you are. There are no rules to follow and you can incorporate all that is important to you. We’re not sure about you but to us, celebrating you and your boo all day with your loved ones and then having the one on one with your new hubby at night gives you the best of both worlds.

    Until next time.

    #TravelTuesday – Quebec City

    May 29th, 2018

Quebec City is one of the most beautiful and historically important cities in North America. Located on the bank of the St. Lawrence river, it has a European vibe that attracts millions of tourists per year. Quebec City has long been a hub for history and architecture buffs, but it’s also perfect for foodies, shoppaholics, and beer snobs alike.

Here are KEP’s recommendations for planning un magnifique weekend away in the old city.

    WHERE TO STAY

    Auberge Saint-Antoine

Auberge Saint-Antoine has all the rustic charm of Quebec City combined with the ultra-chic style of a boutique hotel. Perfectly located in Old Quebec, many rooms offer sweeping views of the St. Lawrence river. The on-site Health Club has collagen facials, massages, mani-pedis, and free yoga—all of which are sure to be a hit with your girl gang.

KEP Tip: Chez Muffy is a top-notch restaurant and bar located inside of the hotel. Grab a couple cocktails and catch their live jazz band on Thursday nights from 8-11pm.

    WHERE TO VISIT

    Ateliers & Saveurs

Have a few foodies in your group? Ateliers & Saveurs offers a wide range of cooking, cocktail making, and wine tasting classes in both French and English. They also have private, customizable classes available if you’re looking for something a little more personal.

KEP Tip: The Tendance Cocktail class lets you create three unique cocktails. We think this sounds like the perfect pre-game before a night out with the girls.

    Siberia Station Spa

Escape the hustle and bustle of tourists in Old Quebec with a relaxing day at Siberia Station Spa. You can experience a traditional outdoor Scandinavian-style spa located just 15 minutes outside of the City. Spend the day relaxing in a variety of different jacuzzis, thermal pools, saunas, and steam rooms.

KEP Tip: Receive a discounted rate on any of their many massage options by booking after 5pm.

    WHERE TO EAT

    La Bûche

For brunch check out La Bûche located in the Old Town. They’re known for their traditional French-Canadian dishes with a contemporary flare. In addition to great food, La Bûche serves up a quirky and eclectic ambiance. The colorful murals, cafeteria-style trays, and checkered napkins will give you something to smile about while you sip your mimosas.

KEP Tip: Speaking of mimosas, they are $15 and bottomless at La Bûche. Need we say more?

    L’Atelier

For dinner you can’t go wrong with the popular L’Atelier on Grand Allee. The atmosphere is chic and sophisticated with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. L’Atelier offers a nice change of pace from the quaintness of the Old Town. Their booze list is sprawling—featuring clever cocktail names like Gin I. Joe and Absolute Douchebag.

KEP Tip: L’Atelier is known for their creative, specialty tartars. We recommend doing a sampler platter so you can try all of their most popular combinations.

    WHERE TO PARTY

    Dagobert

If you’re looking to party like you’re still in university, look no further than Dagobert Nightclub. You can reserve tables in advanced for you and your crew. Housed in an old mansion, Dagobert has three unique floors of dancing and drinking.

KEP Tip: As true millenials, we would be remiss if we didn’t recommend Dagobert’s 90’s Dance Party night.

    La Barbarie Microbrasserie

For a more laid-back night out head over to La Barbarie, one of city’s best breweries. With over 15 beers on tap and many more in bottles, there’s something for every palette. If the weather is nice, make sure to grab a table on La Barbarie’s lush and lively outdoor patio.

KEP tip: Overwhelmed by beer choices? Order the carousel, a sampling of 8 different varieties in a cute wooden display.

    Xoxo, KEP

Unique Venues: How to Plan a Restaurant Wedding

    May 25th, 2018

One trend that isn’t leaving any time soon is, food. Foodies are taking over the world and many of them are bringing their love for food to the forefront of their weddings.

If you are a foodie couple and are looking for a unique venue for your wedding, look no further than your favourite local restaurant! Bringing your guests to your fave local spot for your reception will leave them happy and full. It also welcomes them into a more intimate side of you and your partner’s life.

There are a few things to consider if you are going to go the restaurant route but have no fear, KEP is here to help steer you in the right direction!

    The Food

Choosing a restaurant based on their food gives you an great opportunity to share a place you love with your guests. Maybe you choose the spot where you and your boo had your first date. When you go for your tasting make sure you curate your menu with plates that mean something to you as a couple. What was the first dish you tried together? Serve that as an hors d’oeuvres and follow it with your favourite meal as the main course.

Some restaurants will charge you slicing fee if you bring an outside dessert. Make sure to find out if there is an in-house pastry chef. Schedule a tasting at the same time as your meal tasting. This may inspire you to say “buh-bye” to cake and “hello” to donut walls and crème brulee tables.

    The Price

While many think that having a restaurant wedding may cut costs, this isn’t always the case. Your fee will be based on covering the business that they are “giving up” to host your event. If you are discussing having the whole restaurant exclusively for you and your guests, you may be looking at a cost of $10,000 to $15,000 for the evening.

If you are planning a smaller wedding or trying to save money, there may be other options available. Some restaurants have private rooms that can fit anywhere from 10 to 100 people or they will do a partial buyout of their space rather than renting the whole venue.

The day of the week also plays a factor in determining the cost of the restaurant. Booking a Saturday night at one of the most sought out restaurants in town can cost much more than a Sunday or week night. Also, not all restaurants are open during the day. Ask if they are willing to open during the day on a Saturday or Sunday for a brunch or lunch option as well.

Lastly, you’ll need to discuss your menu and bar options. An open bar and seated 3-4 course meal with a cocktail hour will be on the expensive side. A more budget friendly option could be passed hors d’oeuvres and/or table stations as well as a cash bar with specialty drinks.

    The Decor

Restaurants have a distinctive style and their own furniture which helps you save in the rental department. That doesn’t mean that you can’t discuss adding your own touches to their space. You could accentuate the tables with a different coloured napkin or tablecloth, or maybe add centerpieces.

Modern restaurants tend to have a special spot within or just outside their space to catch people’s attention i.e. ivy or stone walls. If your location has a spot such like this make sure you do utilize it. An ivy wall is a great spot to have a makeshift photobooth. Bring your own supplies and tie up some balloons for a backdrop that will make your guests go wild.

    The Logistics

There are a few questions you’ll want to ask the venue to clarify before sealing the deal.

First things first, find out the restaurant’s capacity. Since dinner will be served for everyone at once, make sure the kitchen can accommodate your group.

The second most important aspect of the evening, DANCING! Depending on the number of guests a dance floor may take away space from tables and chairs. Plan a time after dessert where table and chairs can be removed to allow for more dancing room.

Of course, you can’t have dancing without music! Restaurants are set up for background music but if you have a band or DJ they may need to bring their own sound equipment. Some places aren’t properly insulated for loud music which can affect their neighbours. This could mean a quieter dance floor party before moving on to another venue … aka the after party!

Ensure you know the parking situation for the restaurant you have chosen. Depending on the location guests may choose not to drive. However, it is still good to know if parking spots are available to you and if so, how many there are and if it is free.

Lastly, check out the bathrooms. You want a venue that has adequate facilities for the number of people attending your wedding. Worst case scenario is there is one stall for 100 guests and that’s a situation you’d like to avoid.

All in all, a restaurant wedding can make for a fun, intimate and unique venue. It allows you to get creative and host and evening for your guests that is sure to leave lasting memories.

    Until next time.

    You Got This: A Pre-Wedding Self-Care Guide

    May 18th, 2018

The birds are chirping, tulips are blooming, and orange construction cones are popping up all over the city. It can only mean one thing–wedding season is upon us! If you’re getting married this summer, you’re probably a mix of excitement, stress, and anticipation. Balancing wedding planning with a full-time job and family demands can be overwhelming. When the signs of burnout start creeping in, you know it’s the perfect time to practice a little self-care. Here are our top tips for getting you re-centered, re-focused, and re-energized before your big day.

Go on a mini getaway with your partner

Let’s face it, the lead up to a wedding can be trying on even the most rock-solid relationships. Take time to out of your busy schedule to focus on what your wedding is all about–marrying your best friend! Sneak away for a low-key weekend together. Bonus points if it gets you off the grid, away from emails or phone calls. Go camping or rent a cute cabin on Airbnb. If a trip isn’t feasible, designate one night a week to cook a romantic dinner, watch movies, or play board games. Most importantly, don’t talk about wedding plans.

KEP suggests: For an easy and ultra-luxe glamping experience, check out Element’s Luxury Tented Camp and Nature Spa. Their nightly rates include all of your meals, fresh towels and linens, and private washrooms.

Take a break from dieting and strenuous exercise

A lot of couples feel pressure to get the so-called perfect wedding body in the months leading up to their big day. Maintaining a healthy routine is never a bad idea, but crash dieting and extreme exercise can take an adverse toll on your body–especially when stress levels are high. Swap out your cardio routine for a low impact activity like yoga. Soak in some vitamin D while working towards your goals by hiking, biking, or kayaking. Focus on eating nutritious, high-energy foods without depriving yourself of the things you love.

KEP suggests: Elevate Yoga offers a wide variety of different classes for every skill level and need. Their Mind + Body class—which focuses heavily on meditation—will have you zenned out in no time.

Treat yourself to a spa day

Spend a full day pampering yourself either at home or at the spa. Get a massage, read a book, and focus on getting your skin in tip-top shape. Not only will you leave feeling relaxed, but you’ll be one step closer to that gorgeous wedding glow on your big day.

KEP Suggests: Set in the scenic Gatineau Hills, Nordik Spa-Nature offers a spa day experience like no other. Get a massage in the outdoor cabins, then chill out by the panoramic pool with one of their many delicious cocktails.

    Don’t go at it alone

Trust us when we say you can’t do it all. When friends and family ask if they can help you with anything, let them! Planning a wedding is a huge undertaking, regardless of size or budget. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, communicate to your partner, family or friends that you need some support. Hand over smaller, tedious tasks. You do not want to be setting up chairs on the morning of your wedding. It’s easy to get caught up in every minute detail of planning, but allow yourself to keep the bigger picture in focus.

KEP suggests: Of course the best pre-wedding self-care is to let a qualified planner at Kennedy Event Planning take the reigns. Whether it’s one month or one year before your wedding date, our team of experts are here to help. Call us at 613.762.7879 or email us at info@kennedyevents.ca today!

How to: Throw a Royal Wedding Brunch Party in Style

    May 7th, 2018

If you are anything like us, the upcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is your Super Bowl. Mark your calendar and set your alarm clocks now because the festivities kick off at 7am EST on Saturday, May 19th. Just because you can’t be there in person (we’re still patiently waiting on our invite, Megs!), doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate in style. Here are our tips for planning a brunch viewing party fit for a queen.

    Crown Jewel Cocktails

A royal wedding calls for something a bit fancier than your go-to Caesar or Mimosa recipe. Class it up a notch with this creative and refreshing “Earl Grey Martini”. Impress your guests with some pitchers of Pimm’s Cup – a warm-weather British staple. If you want to keep things authentic, order a bottle of Chapel Down Sparkling Wine which is rumoured to be what Meghan and Harry will be toasting with on their big day.

    Fanciful Finger Foods

No british-themed party is complete without an assortment of fancy appetizers. These mini-pork pies require a bit more effort, but the final product is beyond cute. Break up the britishness with a tray of hamburger sliders as a nod to Miss Merkle’s American background. When it comes to wedding dessert, the royals have long favoured the dreaded fruitcake. Thankfully, Harry and Meghan have chosen a lemon elderflower recipe instead. While a gigantic eight-tiered, fondant covered beauty like Will and Kate’s may be above your skill level, you can probably manage this cupcake recipe.

    “I Do” Decor

Spot on decorations are a must for any royal event. Serve your  treats on these festive Party Like Royalty plates. Hang this adorable Harry and Meghan bunting in the viewing area. Running out of time to order something? Swing by your local florist for some white garden roses and peonies to display. They’re Meghan’s favourite flowers and will definitely be making an appearance at the wedding.

    Posh Party Games

You will need something for your guests to do during the inevitable commercial breaks. The CBC has helpfully created a Royal Wedding Bingo that you can download and print for free. Provide an assortment of quirky craft materials and some hot glue and host a fascinator making contest. Top it all off with a photo booth area and some anglophile props for that perfect royal wedding selfie with your besties.

The One Group That Always Has Your Back

    May 3rd, 2018

Lets just get it out in the open right away… planning a wedding is stressful. They take a year to plan – some times less, some times more. But one thing that is for sure, you will always have a support system by your side through this process.

As a bride to be, wedding planning can take over your day to day life, but you should never forget that there are the people closest to you who are there to help you.

And who may that be you ask? Well, it’s your bridesmaids of course! Your closest, dearest friends who you have asked to stand by your side on this very special day.

They are party planners for your bridal shower and bachelorette, your hostesses for your wedding day, they are your biggest advocates and you should lean on them when needed.

Here are a few reasons why your ride or dies will be your saviours before, during and after one of the most exciting moments in your life.

    Before: T.H.E.R.A.P.I.S.T.S

Do you feel like you’re going crazy and about to pull all your hair out of you head? Well have no fear! Throughout your wedding planning process your bridesmaids will continue to be your most trusted go to’s and hands down the best listeners. They’ll be there to keep you calm mid meltdown, they’ll turn a stressful moment into a funny one and they’ll always be prepared with tissues, hugging and all the wine you need.

    Courtesy of Frances Morency Photography.

    During: B.R.I.D.E.S.I.T.T.E.R

Think baby sitter but bride sitter. Yup, that’s right! Your girls will be there on the day of your wedding to make sure you take a seat and rest and eat and drink – because hey, you tried the food and wine already and it’s amazing. They’ll make sure you’re up dancing and most importantly enjoying and having fun at your wedding.

    Courtesy of Laura Kelly Photography

    After: S.U.P.P.O.R.T.E.R.S

Your bridesmaids will always be your number one supporters. They’ve assisted you with all your tasks. They were your cheerleaders when too many hands were in the cookie jar. When you told them to jump, they asked you how far. They went above and beyond your expectations and supported you through every meltdown, stressful, relieving and exciting moment during this process. They proved their loyalty to you and solidified your reasoning as to why these girls have been your day one’s from the start.

The stress of planning a wedding can be very overwhelming. You wouldn’t forget to lean on your girls during any other stressful time in your life, don’t forget to do it now.

Your bride babes are your go to for all your wedding needs. They are there to celebrate you and your boo to be and they are there to not only add some extra fun to the party but to add extra fun to the planning too.

    Something Old, Something New

    April 18th, 2018

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

This traditional saying has been around for almost 200 years. Every human on the planet has most likely heard it, but do they know it’s true meaning? This saying dates back to the Victorian era where it started out as a rhyme and has been modified over the years to become an important custom that many brides hold near and dear to their hearts.

Often, these four items are gifted to the bride prior to the wedding, but you can also own your day and creativity by finding your own pieces. Traditionally, all of the items hold a special meaning, and these meanings are part of the transition into married life. Something old represents the couple as they were in the past, and something new reflects their shared life together. Something borrowed is usually a token of good prosperity as it comes from a woman in the family who is already happily married, and something blue hopes to bring the couple fidelity and purity.

As with any wedding tradition, this one is also not mandatory to follow. If you’d like to see some fun and unique ways to tackle this tradition on your special day, keep reading!

    Something Old

Your something old can be a great way to pay your respects to a treasured family member. Even if they are not around to bear witness and share your special day, they can still be with you in spirit. It could be a family heirloom or piece that has been passed down through generations!

Lockets or pins attached to your bouquet, or even wrapping your father or grandfather’s tie around the handle of your bouquet are examples of how to incorporate something old. Or how about going that extra mile and wearing your grandmother or mother’s wedding dress yourself?! Even if their style wasn’t exactly your style, there are many bridal shops that are able to incorporate specific elements you like about the old dress into your dream dress!

    Something New

A huge trend we have seen lately are brides thinking outside of the box for their something new and we LOVE IT. For the more modern bride, or bride who is just looking for a unique idea, how about custom name rings, a custom Moto or jean jacket for when the night gets chillier or matching tattoos? The fun part about your something new is that you have entire freedom and creativity to come up with a small token of meaning that truly represents you and your future spouse!

    Something Blue

This tradition can be one of the harder ones to adhere to. The beauty of the colour blue is that there is such a vast selection of shades that even if powder blue doesn’t work for your colour palette, then maybe a deep, navy blue will! Why not try subtle blue make up, nail polish, or blue jewelry? We think these are some fun options to make your something blue pop, while still maintaining the vision that you have for your day.

    Something Borrowed

Your mother, grandmother or maybe even a close family member, will probably want to have a say in your something borrowed. So many of your loved ones will want to feel like they contributed to your special day in some way, and let’s get real, that often involves clashing with your views. Always be appreciative of this type of loving help, but don’t forget to stand your ground and choose something that holds meaning for you. Maybe you had your eye on your mom’s veil, or your grandmothers heirloom hair piece, or maybe you’ve always wanted to borrow your grandfather’s vintage car to take off and capture a few photos in. It’s your big day you get what your heart desires.

All in all, this very old tradition continues to modify itself throughout the years. Whether you are a traditional bride or a more modern bride, the wonderful part is you can customize this tradition and incorporate it into your day however you see fit. The most important thing to remember when picking out all your items is: be true to you – it is your day after all!

Wedding Traditions to BREAK this Wedding Season

    April 11th, 2018

Modern weddings are so freeing! Gone are the days of etiquette rules of our parents’ and grandparents’ generations. We are no longer restricted to cookie-cutter programs and wedding outlines – the possibilities are endless for the modern couple! To help you break free of any lingering traditional hang-ups, here are our top four trends to break this season:

    A Mid-Summer’s Pastel Dream

This year’s trend is colour, colour, colour! Summer weddings, in particular, are typically adorned with bright and vibrant hues, and we love that! Does that mean that there is anything wrong with a more soft and romantic vibe with a pretty pastel palette? Absolutely not! Some couples are vibrant and loud, and some couples are more demure and sweet. We’re here to tell you, you do not have to adhere to a colour trend if it doesn’t match your couple style and personality.

    Love Knows No Time

Do you want to get married at 10 am on a Sunday? Do it! Do you want to have your ceremonious first kiss to be at midnight on New Year’s Eve? Do it! Do you want to enjoy a breakfast reception instead of dinner so that your grandma isn’t out past her bedtime? Do it! Dinner, drinks, and dancing are traditional, however, hosting different style of program has its own unique charm too. Don’t limit yourself with the usual and traditional, love is timeless!

    Scheduling Error 404

Along with the timing of your wedding, there is also no rulebook for the sequence of events that you have to follow or take part in. If you don’t want to have a cake-cutting ceremony or have a father-daughter dance, then don’t! The beauty of the modern wedding is that you get to create the programming for your own wedding, so pick some elements that you truly enjoy and would love to look back on fondly and stick to that; everything else can be ignored.

    Magic is in the Numbers

Gone are the days of perfectly matched bridal parties; each bridesmaid escorted by her personal groomsmen are not the norm any longer. More and more couples are opting to have small, often odd numbered wedding parties or choosing to not have any at all! Don’t feel obligated to search for one more person to even out your wedding party because your fiance has a set of friends in theirs. We believe strongly to have the right number of attendants that feels best for you, whether it be even or odd, mix gender, or dog! You should be backed by those who mean the most to you!
